choose single-stage pump or two-stage pump?
Unless you have to pump high rises, the Two-Stage has no advantage and the disadvantage of additional mechanical stuff to worry about.
When I first started we had two stage pumps. Since then we have purchased newer vehicles with single stage pumps. I find the single stage to be easier to use. There is no questioning whether you are at the point to switch from pressure to volume.
The only common reason to have two-stage pumps today is for operations at high-rise buildings.
In the past, 2 Stage pumps where more common to since they were easier for the older lower HP, lower Torque engines to drive.
A two stage pump has two impellers. In a 2000gpm pump, each impeller is rated at 1000gpm 150psi.
In volume mode, both pump in parallel, delivering 2000gpm 150psi.
In pressure mode, they pump in series, one into the other, to deliver 1000gpm 300psi.
So, except pump high rises, we will choose single-stage pump.
